Name: Will Fischer
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Age: 20
College: Will Rice
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Extracurricular activities: Rock climbing, Rice Television, and Will Rice socials
Favorite thing to do at Rice: Mechanical engineering (a little nerdy, I know), because I am a tinkerer by nature. My major suits me very well.
The thing that surprised me most about Houston: How nice the weather is. Sounds strange, but don’t be scared. We don’t get winter, but fall and spring are generally quite pleasant.
What I like most about Houston: Being right on the Metro line. I go to the opera and symphony a lot. (This is what happens when you date a music major.)
Ways in which Rice has changed/shaped me: I’ve been known to have blue or patterned hair. Not a value instilled from my all-boys high school at all.
Something I’ve done at Rice that I didn’t expect to do: Didn’t think I’d ever climb the 45-90-180-degree vertical granite monolith in the engineering quad.
Favorite food at Rice: My roommates and I enjoy nightly Oreo® cookies (double stuff are the only way). Those are true moments of bonding.
My plans after graduation: Who knows? Maybe I’ll go to law school or a corporate job. A friend and I also have thought about starting a mechanical consulting or new technology investment business.
Rice is: Totally unique—everyone here smiles. Academics are competitive, but not cutthroat like many of the top universities in the United States.
