Emergency Program - Visiting Student Opportunities

We hope the information below will explain the opportunities Rice University plans to make available for Houston area Tulane University students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.  This site will be updated regularly.

Other institutions are also stepping up. Please check with colleges and universities in your area. At this time, we believe the following institutions in Texas are also working on plans to assist.

Houston Baptist University

St. Thomas University

Texas Southern University

University of Houston

University of Texas

Eligibility

Rice will accept into courses on a space-available basis students with pre-existing permanent residency in the Houston area who are enrolled as undergraduates for the fall semester at Tulane University. The Houston area is defined as residency in zip codes 77000 through 77599. This opportunity is not intended to serve students from other communities, and therefore students may not relocate to the Houston area for this program.

Course Availability

Courses will be offered on a space available basis to students in the program. Please note that acceptance into the "Emergency Program - Visiting Students" does not guarantee a full-time course load nor that courses will be available in your specific major.

Admission

Applicants are asked to submit an application to the "Emergency Program - Visiting Students" and the following information to the Office of Admission in person or by fax (713-348-5952 or 713-348-5323) no later than 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 8:

  • Special emergency application
  • Proof of pre-existing permanent residency in the Houston area (see application for examples)
  • Proof of enrollment at Tulane, demonstrated by any reasonable means, such as – but not limited to – the following examples:

    • Letter confirming fall semester enrollment
    • Course schedule for this Fall
    • Copy of valid Tulane student identification card
    • Any correspondence demonstrating expected
               enrollment, housing, etc.

  • Any available academic transcripts, high school or college, to be used to assist in academic advising; if no transcripts are available, submit a chronological summary of courses taken in high school and college, noting course titles, departments and grades
  • No application fee will be required.

Enrollment

Students will be notified of approval for emergency visiting student status no later than 9:00 P.M. Friday, September 9.  Emergency program students will have academic advising opportunities and campus orientation on Saturday, September 10 and will be allowed to start classes on Monday, September 12. Classes are already in session; students entering the program will be responsible for catching up to their classes that will be in the fourth week of the 15-week semester.  More information regarding start dates and advising will appear on the Rice website shortly.

Credits

Transcripts will be issued at the end of the fall semester.  As it is intended that these courses will be applied toward the completion of the Tulane degree, emergency program students will not be eligible to automatically enroll at Rice as degree-seeking students.

Charges

If students have already paid their fall semester tuition to Tulane - with proof of payment - Rice will provide available space in classes at no additional out-of-pocket expense to the students and will work with the students to assure they remain eligible for federal financial aid. If students have not yet paid Tulane tuition, Rice tuition will be charged. More information on charges will be made available later.

Housing

Campus housing is completely full, so no housing will be offered.  The expectation is that this emergency program will serve students within commuting distance.
