See the world, really ... see the world
Rice has a long-standing partnership with NASA, and many Rice graduates join NASA for careers in engineering, among other fields. Some go on to become astronauts like Peggy Whitson, '86, who spent six months aboard the space station, where she conducted 21 investigations in human life and microgravity sciences.

Transfer Admission

Rice welcomes applications from transfer students and matriculates approximately 50 transfers a year.  Students are considered transfer applicants if they have earned nine or more college credit hours and have not been enrolled in high school for at least one year.  These credit hours do not include college courses taken during high school.

Please note that the School of Architecture does not typically admit transfer students. If you have questions about admission to the School of Architecture, contact them directly at (713) 348-4864 or arch@rice.edu.

Transfer applicants must submit the Transfer Common Application and the Rice Supplement to the Transfer Common Application, along with the appropriate supporting documentation listed below.  Read the full Transfer Application Instructions for more detail.  Transfer applicants should have a grade point average of at least 3.20 in their recent college work.

A complete Transfer Application to Rice consists of the following:

  1. Transfer Common Application
  2. The Rice Supplement to the Transfer Common Application
  3. a nonrefundable $65 application fee
  4. SAT or ACT scores
  5. final high school transcript
  6. all official college transcript(s)
  7. a transcript listing courses in progress
  8. the College Official's Report
  9. two College Instructor Evaluations
  10. Rice Signature Page for those who submit their application online (this form must be printed and mailed to the Rice Admission Office)
  11. International Student Financial Statement for International Transfer applicants

Download the Transfer Application Checklist for a complete list of all application requirements and deadlines.

Interviews are not offered to transfer applicants.

Because transfer students come to Rice from many different colleges and universities, a standard list of classes that transfer is not available. If accepted, transfer students generally receive credit only for courses equivalent to those offered for credit at Rice.  Refer to our course catalog for a description of classes offered at Rice.

The deadline to apply for January 2010 enrollment is October 15, 2009.  The deadline to apply for August 2010 enrollment is March 15, 2010.
