Advanced Placement Summer Institute

The fourteenth annual Rice University Advanced Placement Summer Institute offers four weeks of challenging AP and Pre-AP courses for new and experienced teachers as well as one week of Academies that address advanced topics in AP. Courses are led by College Board-endorsed consultants.

Administered by the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies and endorsed by the Southwestern Region of the College Board, the institute has grown to become one of the largest in the country and attracts teachers from all over Texas, other states in the U.S., and other countries.

Academies for High School Teachers of Advanced Courses
Advanced Topics in AP

Held during the Advanced Placement Summer Institute, Rice offers one week of Academies that provide teachers with the opportunity to delve deeply into specific course content and to connect to their discipline’s current work. Facilitated by experience AP teachers who also serve as College Board consultants, each course is typically composed of eight different presentations by distinguished faculty from Rice and other institutions of higher education.

According to the College Board, Rice is the only institute in the country offering the week-long Academies for AP teachers.

Summer Institute on Reading, Writing, and Cultural Connections

The weeklong institute focuses on beginning reading and writing education, with an emphasis on current methodological issues, the role of writing, and the impact of culture. “This institute was an excellent professional development experience,” says Cami Jones, director of early childhood education for the Texas Education Agency. The institute, available for preschool and primary teachers, will be held in July at a location to be determined.
