Rice has a long-standing partnership with NASA, and many Rice graduates join NASA for careers in engineering, among other fields. Some go on to become astronauts like Peggy Whitson, '86, who spent six months aboard the space station, where she conducted 21 investigations in human life and microgravity sciences.

Dual Enrollment Students

Need more academic challenges? You can apply to Rice if you are a local high school junior or senior and have exhausted your school’s curriculum in a particular area. Admission for a limited number of spaces is competitive and highly selective, with enrollment restricted to a maximum of two courses per student/semester.

Rice courses can be used to fulfill credit requirements, with the high school’s approval, or the courses may be applied toward credit at the university level. Home-schooled students must demonstrate that they have exhausted all other community resources before applying for dual enrollment at Rice. Dual enrollment at Rice is no guarantee of future admission through the Freshman Application.

A complete application to Rice includes:

  1. Rice Application for Dual Enrollment  (available soon)
  2. a nonrefundable $65 application fee
  3. official high school transcript
  4. a recommendation from an appropriate official at your current high school (e.g. principal or guidance counselor) stating that you are in good standing and have been granted permission to take additional courses at Rice
  5. a recommendation from your high school teacher(s) of the subject(s) to be taken at Rice explaining that you have exhausted all courses within that specific area and are ready to do college-level work
  6. an official copy of SAT or ACT scores

Dual-enrollment applications and all required pieces are due by December 1 for spring enrollment and June 1 for fall enrollment. Dual enrollment students will be charged the same fees as undergraduate students. The tuition for new students for the 2009-2010 school year is $1,310 per semester hour. In addition, students must pay a $125 nonrefundable registration fee, and students in the program are not eligible for financial aid.
