Campus Security and Safety

While Rice is a part of the fourth-largest city in the United States, it is located in one of the safest areas of Houston. Surrounded by upscale neighborhoods, the Texas Medical Center and the museum district, the area is well protected by several different policing authorities.

Rice is not exempt from the safety concerns faced by all large cities and employs fully trained police officers in its own police department. The police patrol the campus and its buildings 24 hours a day.

Officers assigned to the residential colleges conduct informal safety meetings to keep students apprised of crime issues, crime prevention techniques and property protection measures. University police have implemented a number of anticrime measures, such as safety seminars, public awareness bulletins and a bicycle registration service.

Safety Features

  • Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System training is provided in this nationally-recognized women's self defense and awareness program.
  • Emergency telephones are strategically stationed throughout the university grounds, providing students with direct links to the university police.
  • Rice's magnetic identification cards control access to many campus buildings during regular and nonbusiness hours. Residential colleges are restricted 24 hours a day.
  • Escort service is available at all times from the transportation department and the university police.
